The Board of Police Commissioners voted unanimously yesterday (Jan. 26, 2012) just before 6 p.m. to promote Lieutenant Raymond Dunbar, a 26 year veteran of the agency, to the position of Captain which will take effect Monday January 30, 2012.

Dunbar was hired in 1981 as a supernumerary (part-time) officer and was accepted to the agency’s full-time force in 1985. Dunbar was assigned to the Patrol Division and during his time as a patrol officer was assigned to the Statewide Narcotics Taskforce for a year. Officer Dunbar was promoted to Patrol Sergeant in 2000, Patrol Lieutenant in 2003 and was most recently assigned as the Department’s Administrative Lieutenant position in 2010.

Dunbar served in the US Navy as a Second Class Petty Officer from 1976 to 1980, after which time, he was employed by both Electric Boat and Norton Industries prior to his full-time career in law enforcement.

Dunbar resides in Clinton with his wife of 34 years, Cynthia. They have two (2) children, Alicia and Kelly who both live in Connecticut.

Dunbar said, “We have a number of great projects and initiatives that our agency is undertaking, I look forward to the opportunity to bring them to fruition.”

Chief Kevin Halloran said, “Due to upper level management retirements, there will be a number of promotions. Fortunately our agency is graced by a number of excellent officers, like newly appointed Captain Dunbar who will be promoted to fill those ranks and assignments.” Halloran continued, “I also know, however, that since the field of candidates are so well qualified, that our Board of Commissioners are faced with extremely difficult decisions.”
